CONTEXT:  

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency is a dynamic and  growing inter-governmental organization, with 174 member states. IOM is committed to the  principle that “humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society”. Established in  1951 and now active in over 440 field locations worldwide, IOM works with partners,  government, and civil society to promote international cooperation to address operational  challenges of migration and mobility, assist in the search for practical solutions to migration  problems, and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and  internally displaced people. IOM addresses the migratory phenomenon from an integral and  holistic perspective, including links to development, to maximize its benefits and minimize its  negative effects. 

Under the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer and overall supervision  of the Head of Programme Support Unit in Maputo, the intern will be responsible for providing  assistance with the operational activities in relation with PSU unit. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  1. Assist in creating engaging written and visual content for social media posts, ensuring  alignment with IOM’s key messages and branding guidelines. 
  2. Support the management of IOM’s social media accounts by posting updates, engaging  with the audience, monitoring online discussions and organizing content calendar to  ensure timely and strategic posting across various communication channels. 
  3. Provide assistance in the production of multimedia content, including graphic design,  photo and video documentation. 
  4. Assist in updating and maintaining the organization’s website, ensuring that content is  accurate, up-to-date, and visually appealing. 
  5. Help organize and coordinate internal and external events, including preparing  materials, managing registrations, and providing on-site support. 
  6. Assist in maintaining and organizing a comprehensive database of communication  materials, photographs, and other media assets for easy access and retrieval. 7. Assist on the creation of Pemba’s monthly report and bimonthly newsletter. 8. Provide general administrative support to the communications team, including  scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and taking minutes. 
  7. Conduct research on communication best practices, industry trends, and emerging  platforms to inform and enhance IOM Mozambique communication strategies. 10. Input and analyse data related to communication metrics, helping to assess the impact  and reach of various communication activities. 
  8. Perform other tasks as may be assigned. 

EDUCATION 

Applicants to this internship must, at the time of application meet one of the following  requirements: 

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum  bachelor’s level or equivalent) preferably in Journalism, Audiovisual Production, Mass  Media Communications or Public Information or a related field; or 
  • Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second university degree or equivalent,  or higher) preferably in the above field of study; or 
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship  within one year of graduation. 

EXPERIENCE 

  • While no prior work experience is required, some professional experience is desirable in: communications and project implementations, international journalism, including  coverage of international organizations, using social media platforms for professional  purposes,  
  • Experience in communications, media, or public relations is an advantage.
  • Exposure to IOM’s institutional setting and or other international organizations and  familiarity with IOM branding guidelines is an advantage. 

SKILLS 

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a  clear and concise manner. 
  • Online communication and social media skills. 
  • Good level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict  deadlines in a complex and fast changing environment 
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design and multimedia software is desirable.
  • Knowledge of migration and humanitarian issues is a plus 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. 
  • Good communication and collaboration skills. 
  • Strong computer literacy: MS Office: Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint is an asset. 

LANGUAGES 

Working knowledge (both oral and written) of English and Portuguese is required. Knowledge  of local languages in an advantage.
